An Introduction to the Gig Economy
It’s 2020, so most of you are likely familiar with or have at least heard of the Gig Economy. The Gig Economy is the labor market that consists of freelance and short-term jobs as opposed to traditional 9 to 5 full-time employees. Freelancing and independent contract work is a relatively new concept. But huge thanks to the Internet for creating a place where individuals of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds can monetize their unique gifts to turn a profit.
I’ve been curious for years about how exactly this Gig Economy works. I’ve wondered what it might look like for a thirty-something like myself to pursue this path instead of the one laid out before me by Corporate America.
Why I’m Starting Now
I went through a recent and unanticipated departure from employment in the software as a service realm. I have decided to take this as an opportunity to step back from climbing the corporate ladder by exploring some of the alternative options for making money that exists. Don’t get me wrong; I loved my job. I enjoyed working alongside teams of people to create beautiful, functional software. What I couldn’t shake over the past few years was the nagging desire that I should do something more creative, something different that would broaden my horizons.
I’ve discussed this with some girlfriends, and it’s incredible to see how many of them have similar feelings. It seems that a number of the people I’ve talked to are curious about alternative work styles, but most of us are scared to leap.
My Strategy for the Next Chapter
With nothing but time and opportunity ahead of me (not to mention an incredibly supportive husband who has my back on this crazy journey), I am off to see what it takes for a Millennial to survive and thrive in the gig economy. Over the next year, I will be tracking my journey. I’ll start by figuring out what in the world I am going to do then go through process of getting established and finding work. I hope this journey ends with me becoming wildly successful and deciding to stick with it for the long run.
My hope for this adventure is that I can share the experience with others who are considering taking this leap. I’ll do my best to provide guidance and lessons learned. Hopefully I can help someone steer clear of any problem areas I encounter along the way. I will be posting a weekly update that shows the progress from the prior week. The updates will include things I learn about each freelancing platform and my overall financial picture of income vs. expenses.
Thanks for following along and cheers to adventure and new beginnings!
